Where to find more job postings in NGOs and United Nations agencies?
Job openings on large online platforms
The quickest way to find job listings from humanitarian action, development and international cooperation organisations is through one of the following platforms:
- ReliefWeb is managed by OCHA and is the main reference for job searching in the humanitarian and development sectors. Many international NGOs, UN agencies, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and some think tanks post their vacancies here. UN agencies use it inconsistently, however, and do not publish all their openings on this platform.
- Devex, also well known, is a private for-profit platform. It is more oriented towards development cooperation than humanitarian action, and publishes vacancies from consultancies, NGOs, UN agencies, foundations, and the private sector.
- Impactpool is a private Swedish platform founded in 2015. It aggregates job vacancies from international NGOs, UN agencies, the European Union, and other intergovernmental organizations. Its strong point is its coverage of the United Nations system.
- UN Careers is the official jobs portal of the United Nations Secretariat and covers positions at the headquarters in New York and Geneva, peacekeeping missions, international tribunals, and the Young Professionals Programme. It does not, however, cover specialised agencies such as UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR or WFP, which have their own separate portals.
- There are other United Nations system aggregators such as UNtalent and UNvacancies. These are independent initiatives that aggregate positions from between 40 and 60 organisations, and their value is clear: they allow you to avoid having to search agency by agency. Their most obvious limitation is that they do not include NGOs.
What about national NGOs? Although some publish on international platforms, most tend to recruit through local platforms and networks.
Job openings from NGOs and international agencies on their own websites
On the websites of different NGOs and organizations it is possible to find more vacancies and more details about the organization, the work they do, the selection process or the working conditions. To do this, look for sections titled Jobs or Careers, usually at the bottom of the home page of their website.
Some organizations, in addition to posting specific job positions (with exact geographic location, responsibilities and requirements) also allow the submission of applications for generic positions, so that they can pre-select professionals to whom they can offer specific positions when vacancies arise.
Linkedin and your network
Never underestimate the value of your network of acquaintances in the humanitarian and international cooperation sector. The humanitarian system is smaller than it seems and it is very common to proactively search for candidates among contacts and contacts of contacts. In networks such as Linkedin, in addition, lots of jobs that urgently need to be filled as soon as possible are shared.
If you have not yet had professional experience, your network of contacts may be still to be built. However, do not hesitate to open a Linkedin profile. As you start your training in public health and humanitarian action or your internships in NGOs and other organizations you will meet professors, professionals and other colleagues you can connect with.
